Story:
Hugh Palmer was born in Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 31 Dec 1897 and baptised there on 27 Mar 1898 the son of John Feltham Palmer and Amelia Palmer (nee Pitman).  He lived all his early life in Motcombe including at Elm Top and later at Wolfridge Farm.  He attended Shaftesbury Grammar School, Shaftesbury, Dorset for some of his education.  He enlisted in the Royal Air Force on 5 Jun1918 as a Private Class 2 (Service No. 178326).  On 24 Aug 1918 he was promoted to Flight Cadet (Pilot Learner) until his discharge on 27 Mar 1919.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Larkinglass Farm, Motcombe, Dorset, described as a Dairy Farmer and single. He also was an ARP Warden.   His death was recorded at Sturminster, Dorset, in 1954.

Story:
Geoffrey Noel Rawlings was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, on 25 Nov 1899 and baptised at St. Martins Church, Salisbury, on 20 Dec 1899 the son of George Herbert Rawlings and Ida Jeannie Rawlings (nee Sandbrook).  He spent his very early years in Milford, Salisbury, until by 1911 he was shown as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral and attending the Cathedral School.  He finished his education at Shaftesbury Grammar School, Shaftesbury, Dorset, before enlisting in the Royal Navy becoming a Sub-Lieutenant and serving on HMS Tuscan.  Following the end of the war he was awarded the British War Medal and remained in the Navy eventually rising to the rank of Commander.  At one time he was in New Zealand and whilst there married Marjorie Home Morrison in 1929.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at 3 South Parade, Portsmouth, Hampshire.  His death was recorded in Salisbury on 29 Dec 1983.

Story:
James Bruce Senior was born in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, on 9 Jun 1900 the son of Horace Howell Senior (a Farmer) and Gertrude Mary Senior (nee Cole).  He lived his early life at Parish Road, Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, until later when his family moved to East Stour Farm, Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset.  He attended Shaftesbury Grammar School for some of his education.  He enlisted on 2 May 1918 and joined the Royal Air Force as a Private Class 2 (Service No. 175223).  On the 12 Oct 1918 he was promoted to Flight Cadet and became a learner pilot.  He was discharged on 23 Feb 1919.  He married Winifred Maud Ricketts at the Parish Church in Motcombe on 1 Jan 1920.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Forest Hill, Bullingdon, Oxfordshire, working as a Lorry Driver for a Builder's Contractor.  He died at the Cowley Road Hospital, Oxford, on 25 Sep 1967.

Story:
George William Beaumleigh Cheater was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 9 Jul 1893 and baptised at St. Rumbold's Church, Cann, Shaftesbury, on 27 Aug 1893 the son of Albert William Cheater (a Tailor) and Mary Sarah Cheater (nee Tuffin).   He lived most of his early life with his parents at 48 Salisbury Street, Shaftesbury, and received some of his education at Shaftesbury Grammar School.  On leaving school he went on to study medicine at Kings College, London, and at Charing Cross Hospital, London, where he gained many distinctions for which his old school were justly proud.  Following the outbreak of WW1 he had enlisted with the Royal Naval Voluntary Reserve being gazetted as a Surgeon Sub Lieutenant on 13 Apr 1918.  According to the Roll of Service (Medical), published after the war, he had served on ships in the Northern Patrol in particular HMS Harebell, an Archusa Class convoy sloop.  On his discharge he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.  He married Lillian Maud Hawes in Droxford, Hampshire, on11 Aug 1923.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Peacock Lodge, Peacock Lane, Brighton, Sussex, described as a Physician.  In fact his honours were listed later as MRCS; LRCP; MB; BSc (London - Hons).  Regrettably he died in Brighton on 31 Jan 1940.

Story:
Charles William James Barnes was born at Twyford, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 31 Oct 1899 the son of Charles Henry Barnes and Laura Ethel Barnes (nee Spencer).  He lived his early life at Gumms Farm, Twyford, and received some of his education at Shaftesbury Grammar School, Shaftesbury, Dorset.  The school records indicate that by 1918 he had enlisted with the Somerset Light Infantry but regrettably no Military Record can be found.  He married Christine May Burrow in the Tisbury, Wiltshire, area in 1927.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Mill Farm, Tisbury Row, Tisbury, Wiltshire, described as a Farmer.  He had retired to 'Honysuckle Mead', Dinton, Wiltshire, where he died on 5 Jan 1989.
