Story: Thomas Edwin Jarrett Latta was born in 1883 in Dean, Sixpenny Handley, Dorset, and baptised at Gussage-All-Saints, Dorset, on 25th November, 1883. He was the son of George Jarrett Latta, a Carpenter, and Mary Ann Latta (née Brewer). At the time of the 1911 Census, he was working as a Farm Labourer and living at Minchington, Farnham, Dorset. He married Annie Laura Avery on 5th October 1912 at Sixpenny Handley, Dorset. He enlisted in Blandford, Dorset, in the 5th Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment (Service No. 10522) and at the time of his death held the rank of Lance Corporal. He served initially inthe Balkans from 11 Jul 1915 and later in France & Flanders and was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star. He died of wounds on 7th October 1916 and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, Etaples, Pas de Calais, France (grave id. XVI.E.10A). He is remembered on the Sixpenny Handley War Memorial, Dorset. At the time of his death his wife was living at 91 Dean, Woodcutts, Dorset, where she was awarded a widow's pension for herself and daughter of 18s.9d. (93p) per week.
