Story:
James Alfred Rideout was born in 1890 in Ashmore, Shaftesbury, Dorset, and was baptised there on 2nd November 1890. He was the son of Alfred Rideout, a gamekeeper, and Elizabeth Ann Rideout (née Davidge). At the time of the 1911 Census he was single, working as a gamekeeper and living at Keepers Lodge, Green Lane, Ashmore. He enlisted in Shaftesbury, Dorset, as a Private in the Dorsetshire Regiment (Service No. 201788). He served with the 6th Battalion in France and Flanders becoming a Lance Corporal and was awarded the Victory and British War Medals. He died of wounds on 11th May 1918 and was buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France (grave id. S.III.H.25). He is remembered on the Ashmore War Memorial, Shaftesbury. His mother had also died in 1918 so his father was in receipt of a dependent's pension of 5s. (25p.) per week. This pension was also short lived as his father died in 1919 and later financial effects went to his sister.
