Story: Hector Card was born on 9 Aug 1891 in Sixpenny Handley, Dorset, and baptised there on 18th October, 1891. He was the son of Harry Card, a farm labourer, and Ellen Card (nee Bailey). At the time of the 1911 Census he was single, working as a bricklayer's labourer and living at Sixpenny Handley, Dorset. He enlisted in Wimborne, Dorset, on 2nd February, 1915, as a Private in the 3rd Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment (Service No. 12892) and served only 20 days before dying of pneumonia on 21st February, 1915, at the Sidney Hall Military Hospital, Weymouth, Dorset, and was buried at the Abbotsbury Road Cemetery, Weymouth, on the 25th February, 1915. (grave id. B. "Gen" 446). His length of service precluded the award of any medals but his mother was awarded a dependent's pension which was transferred to the father following his mother's death in 1936. Hector is remembered on the Sixpenny Handley War Memorial.
