Story:
William Henry Hayter was born in Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 20 Nov 1882 and baptised at St. John's Church on 7 Jan 1883 the son of Harry Hayter and Emily Georgina Hayter (nee Harris).  He spent his early life in Enmore Green and later at Higher Coombe, Donhead St. Mary. Wiltshire.  He enlisted in the Royal Navy on 30 Apr 1898 becoming in time a Chief Yeoman Signaller (Service No. 199356).  He married Sarah Brickell at Portsmouth, Hampshire, in 1902.  He was discharged on pension on 19 Nov 1922 and awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the Royal Naval Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.  He died in Ludwell, Donhead St. Mary, Wiltshire on 20 Feb 1934 from the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Story:
Albert Thomas Foot was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 23 Dec 1885 and baptised at St. James Church, Shaftesbury, on 28 Feb 1886 the son of Erastus Foot and Amelia Foot (nee Foot).  He lived his early life in Church Hill, Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset.  Albert married Florence Louisa Stacey recorded at the Sherborne, Dorset, Registry in 1904.  They went on to have at least 13 children.  He had enlisted on 12 Sep 1912 and joined the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 1674).  He served in France & Flanders and later transferred to the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (Service Nos. 6783 & 202880).  He received wounds which resulted in a partial loss of function in his left arm for which he was discharged on pension on 16 Aug 1918 and awarded the Silver War Badge No. 436190.  He was also awarded the Victory and British War Medals.  The Electoral Register of 1921 shows him still living in Enmore Gree, Shaftesbury. By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Higher Blandford Road, Cann, Shaftesbury, Dorset, working as a Rural Postman.  His death was registered at the Poole, Dorset, Registry in 1971.  His brothers, Archie Job Foot and James Foot, also served in the conflict.

Story:
Edwin James Silcox was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 24 Oct 1893 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Shaftesbury, on 26 Nov 1893 the son of Edwin James Silcox (Senior) and Emma Jane Silcox (nee Weldon).  He lived all his life in the Shaftesbury area including the King's Arms Inn, where his father was the Innkeeper, and later at Barton Cottage, Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, where he lived with his step father, Albert Coward, who his mother had married following the death of Edwin (Senior) in 1900.  Edwin (junior) had enlisted and joined Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service Nos. 3686 & 201749).  He served with the 1/4th Battalion on the North West Frontier with Afghanistan in India.  Following his discharge on 28 Nov 1919 he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the India General Service Medal with Clasp Afghanistan & North West Frontier Force.  The 1921 Census shows he was living with his mother and step-father in Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, working as a Jobbing Gardener. He married Sarah Emma Wright in Shaftesbury on 14 Oct 1922.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at 100 St. James Street, Shaftesbury, Dorset, working as a Gardener.  His death was recorded at the Sturminster, Dorset, Registry in 1971.  His brothers, Harry Silcox and Philip Ernest Silcox, also served in the conflict.

Story:
Walter Charles Pitman was born in Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 21 Feb 1899 and baptised there on 26 Mar 1899 the son of Eli Charles Pitman and Emily Walters Pitman (nee Elliot).  He lived most of his early life in Motcombe and by 1911 was at Hains Farm, Motcombe, where his father was the Farmer.  Walter enlisted and served with the 61st Battalion of the Machine Gun Corps as a Private (Service No. 133357).  He was discharged on 12 Mar 1919 and awarded the Victory and British War Medals. The 1921 Census shows him living with his parents now at Shorts Green Farm, Motcombe, Dorset, where he was assisting his father on the farm.  He married Lilian Mary Andrews at Todber, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 30 Apr 1924.   By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Abbey Farmhouse, Mottisfont, Romsey, Hampshire, described as a Dairy Farmer.  He died at Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, Hampshire, on 25 Aug 1960.

Story:
Alfred Roy Pitman was born in Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 2 Apr 1895 and baptised there on 15 May 1895 the son of Dan Pitman and Mary Ann Pitman (nee Gray).  He spent his early life in The Street, Motcombe.   He enlisted and joined the Dorset (Queen's Own) Yeomanry as a Private (Service No. 1134).  He served in Egypt from 22 April 1914 as part of the Corps of Hussars (Service No. 230450).  On his discharge on 27 Jun 1919 he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star.   He married Stella Constance Kate Lewis in Wincanton, Somerset, in 1920.  The 1921 Census shows him visiting a family in Speckington, Ilchester, Somerset, described as a Second Horseman. By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at Fifehead House Stables, Fifehead Magdalen, Sturminster, Dorset, working as a Stud Groom as well as being an ARP Warden.  His death was recorded in Gillingham, Dorset, on 14 Oct 1956. His brothers, Arthur Victor Pitman and Sidney Pitman, also served and survived the conflict.
