Story: Henry George Hardiman was born on 10th April, 1881 in Ebbesbourne Wake, Wiltshire. He was the son of William Hardiman, a farm labourer, and Sarah Ann Hardiman (nee Coombs). At the time of the 1911 Census he was single, living in Pound Street, Ebbesbourne Wake and working as a Farm Labourer. Regrettably his mother died in 1913. He enlisted in Devizes, Wiltshire, as a Private and joined the 5th Battalion of the Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire) Regiment (Service No. 18773). He was posted to the Balkans region on 12 Jul 1915 and was in action at Gallipoli where, a mere four weeks after his arrival, he was reported missing and subsequently presumed killed in action on 10th August 1915. He was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey (Panel 156 to 158) as well as the Ebbesbourne Wake War Memorial. At the time of his death his father was next of kin and living at The Cross, Ebbesbourne Wake, and was awarded a dependent's pension of a very small amount of 1s. (5p.) per week. His brother, Bertram John Hardiman, also served and survived the conflict.
