George Gray James was born in Blandford St. Mary, Dorset, on 23 Dec 1894 and baptised there on 3 Apr 1885 the son of William James, a Farmer, and Ellen James (nee Gray).  He lived some of his early life at Hookswood Farm, Farnham, Dorset, following the death of his father in 1895.   By 1911 he was boarding out at Harefield Grove Gardens, Harefield, Middlesex, working as a Domestic Gardener.  He had enlisted on 23 Sep 1914 and joined the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 11796).  However after a short period he was discharged on 9 Oct 1914 as unlikely to become an efficient soldier.  He nevertheless made himself available for service prior to any enforced enlistment.  His marriage to Rosalie Ada Margaret Fox was recorded at Uxbridge, Middlesex, during 1915.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living in Tarrant Hinton, Dorset, working as a Gardener.  By 1947 he had moved to Eastbury Park, Tarrant Gunville, Dorset, as Head Gardener.  He died in Tarrant Gunville on 18 Jan 1948 and was buried there on 22 Jan 1948.
