Story:
Charles Gray was born in Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, in 1895 the son of Charles Elijah Gray and Mary Jane (Polly) Gray (nee Love).  He lived all his early life in and around Brickhill, Enmore Green.  He enlisted with the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 10975) and served variously with the 5th, 6th and 11th Battalions in areas including the Balkans.  He was discharged to 'Z' Reserve on 10 Mar 1919 and awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star.  He apparently re-enlisted (or was recalled) and was posted to the 2nd Battalion (Service No. 5719815) and served in Malabar, Mysore, India, where a rebellion had broken out in 1921.  For this he was awarded the India General Service Medal with clasp 'Malabar 1921'.  No further records have been found in Charles's case other than his last medal was addressed to 2 New Road, Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, in 1925.

Victor Coward was born in Motcombe, Dorset, on 12 Sep 1897 and baptised there on 7 Oct 1897 the son of James Coward and Mary Jane Coward (nee Miles).  He spent his early life at The Street,  Motcombe.  He enlisted with the 1/4th Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service Nos. 3080 & 201287).   It is not known in which theatre of war he served but on his discharge on 1 Jul 1919 he was granted a limited pension due to contracting malaria during his service.  He was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.  At the 1921 Census he was living with his parents in Motcombe noted as 'single'.   He later moved for work at the Naval Cordite Factory, Holton Heath, Dorset and set up home at 'Charlton', Jubilee Road, Upper Parkstone, Poole, Dorset.  His death was recorded in Wareham, Dorset, in 1927 following an explosion at the factory at the age of 30 years.  He was buried at St. Mary's Church, Motcombe.  (An apparent marriage to Louisa Mabel Squires on 2 May 1920 does not appear to fit the facts as currently known.) Victor's brothers Charles Edwin (b.1892) and Harold (b.1893) also served with the Dorsets during the war. Sadly Harold died in Mesopotamia in 1917.

George Frederick Coward was born in Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 11 May 1892 the son of Frederick Coward and Emma Coward (nee Dawe).  He lived all his life apart from Military Service in the Enmore Green area.    His marriage to Edith Kate Tucker was registered at Shaftesbury in 1912.   He enlisted and joined the 6th Battalion fo the Welch Regiment as a Private (Service No. 3290).  He later transferred to the 11th Battalion (Service No. 63115) and served with them in the Balkans.  On his discharge on 29 Mar 1919 he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star.   He had married prior to the 1921 Census to Edith Kate Tucker as they were both living in Enmore Green at the time.   The 1939 Register shows he was living at 12 Long Cross, Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, working as a General Farm Worker.  His death was recorded at the Sturminster, Dorset, Registry in 1971.

Charles Edwin Coward was born in Motcombe, Dorset, on 10 Feb 1892 and was baptised there on 24 Apr 1892 the son of James Coward and Mary Jane Coward (nee Miles).   He spent all his life except for Military Service in Motcombe, Dorset.  He enlisted and served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry (Service No. 242120).  He later transferred to the 2/4th Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment (Service No. 200153) eventually being promoted to Acting Warrant Office Class II.  It is not known in which theatre of war he served in but on his discharge on 2 Jul 1919 was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.   At the time of the 1921 Census he was living in The Street, Motcombe, working as an Under Carter on Lord Stalbridges' estate.   Shortly after the Census he married Hilda Mabel Archer in Motcombe, Dorset, on 31 Jul 1921.   By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at 40 The Street, Motcombe, Dorset, working as a Cutter and Dresser in a Bacon Factory as well as volunteering as an ARP Warden.  His died in Motcombe in 1971. Charles brothers Harold (b.1893) and Victor (b.1897) also served with the Dorsets during the war. Sadly Harold in Mesopotamia in 1917.

Percy Herbert Clark was born in Semley, Wiltshire, on 8 Sep 1899 the son of George Henry Clark and Ellen Clark (nee Parsons).  The family moved to Motcombe, Dorset, and Percy spent much of his early life at 35 The Street, Motcombe.   Percy had enlisted with the Shropshire Light Infantry (Service No. 28614) and later the Cheshire Regiment (Service No. 70187) as a Private.  His final unit was the 5th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment (a Training Battalion) (Service No. TR/8/21116).  It was not known in which theatre of war he served in but on his discharge was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.   By the 1921 Census he was living with his widowed father at 59 Elm Hill, Motcombe, working as an Engine Stoker at the CSG Prideaux Ltd milk factory.  His marriage to Winifred Lush in 1929 was registered in Shaftesbury, Dorset.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was recorded at 50 The Street, Motcombe, Dorset, working as a Butcher in a Bacon Factory.  He died in Motcombe on 16 Mar 1974.

Levi John (known as Jack) Clark was born in Motcombe, Dorset, on 3 Mar 1887 and baptised there on 1 May 1887 the son of Charles Clark and Harriet Clark (nee Brickell).  He spent all his life mainly in Bittles Green, Motcombe, Dorset.  He enlisted with the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 26442).    It is not known in which theatre of war he served but he was with the 2nd Battalion and on his discharge on 9 Mar 1919 he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.   By the 1921 Census he was living with his widowed mother at Shorts Green Lane, Motcombe, working as a  Milk Separator Assistant at CSG Prideaux Ltd milk factory.  He married Ellen Rosina (Nellie) Mogg in Motcombe during 1926.   By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at 17 The Street, Motcombe, Dorset, working as a Milk Factory Dairyman.  He died in Motcombe in 1960.

Montague Stephen Burr was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 20 Dec 1894 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Shaftesbury, on 26 Jan 1896 the son of Thomas Burr and Ellen Seline Burr (nee Jenkins).  The family lived in Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, when Montague's father died in 1906.  His mother re-married Arthur Street and by 1911 they were living elsewhere in Shaftesbury.  Montague enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery as a Gunner (Service No. 18542).  He served with his unit in Egypt and on his discharge was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star.  On the 18 Feb 1922 he departed for Australia from London and arrived in Brisbane, Queensland, on 27 Mar 1922.  He married Effie Julia Donald in Victoria, Australia, in 1929.  He spent much of his life after in Fitzroy South, Yarra, Victoria, Australia.  He died in Parkville, Victoria, Australia, in 1947.

Harry Gerald Plowman  (known as Gerald) was born on the 9 Dec 1896 the son of Ada Plowman.  (No father has been named).   He lived most of his early life in the West Orchard area.   He had enlisted and served with the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 14507)  and was attached over time to the 5th and 6th Battalions.    It is not known in which theatre of war he served in but on his discharge on 19 Mar 1919 he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.   By the 1921 Census he was living at West Orchard and working as a General Labourer at Lower Hartgrove Farm.  He married Lilian May Gawler in the Sturminster, Dorset, Registry area in 1927.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at The Avon, Benmoor Road, Poole, Dorset, working as a Bricklayer.  His death was recorded in Poole, Dorset, in 1959.

Harry Philip Moore (often known as Philip Harry Moore) was born at West Orchard, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 15 Oct 1896 the son of Harry William Moore and Elizabeth Jane Moore (nee House).  He lived his early life at Keybrook Road, West Orchard.  He had enlisted and served with the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 16306) later transferring to the Hampshire Regiment (Service No. 0360).  It is not known in which theatre of war he served but on his discharge was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.   By the 1921 Census he was living with his widowed mother at 20 West Orchard, Shaftesbury, described as an unemployed Agricultural Labourer.  He married Mary Louisa Savory in the Sturminster, Dorset, Registry area on 12 Nov 1922,  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at West Hambrook, Langport, Yeovil, Somerset, working as a General Labourer.  His death was recorded in Yeovil on 25 May 1963.  His brother, Arthur Charles Moore, also served in the conflict.

Arthur Charles Moore was born at West Orchard, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 12 Sep 1894 the son of Harry William Moore and Elizabeth Jane Moore (nee House).  He lived his early life at Keybrook Road, West Orchard.   He had enlisted on 23 Jan 1911 and joined the 11th Hussars as a Private later transferring to the 13th Hussars as a Private (Service No. 6880) and served in India.   He was transferred then to the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry Division) on 27 Jun 1916 (Service No. 56823) becoming a Lance Corporal.  He served in France & Flanders and later in Ireland until his discharge on 13 May 1919.   He was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1914/15 Star.  (He remained as a Territorial until 22 Jan 1923).  He married  Lottie May Rose at Sturminster, Dorset, on 6 Apr 1920 and by the 1921 Census they were living with his parents-in-law at 97 Glue Hill, Sturminster, Dorset.  By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at 98 Glue Hill, Sturminster, Dorset, working as a Dorset County Council Roadman.  He death was recorded in Sturminster in 1946.  His brother, Harry Philip Moore, also served in the conflict.
