Story:
Herbert John Stacey was born in Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 10 May 1886 the son of John Stacey and Unity Stacey (nee Elsworth). He lived all his life, apart from Military service, in the Motcombe area. He had married Rose Jane Phillips in Motcombe on 19 Feb 1912. At this time he was employed by the Great Western Railway as a Porter at Semley Station, Wiltshire. He was called up to the Territorials on 24 Aug 1914 and joined the 2nd Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 29735). He served abroad, though it is not known where, eventually being promoted to Lance Corporal. Whilst in service he received gun shot wounds to the left leg and right arm as a result of which he was discharged as being no longer fit for duty on 28 Dec 1917 and awarded the Silver War Badge No. 300785. He later also received the Victory and British War Medals. He died in Shaftesbury, Dorset, during 1936.
