Story: Bertie Stephen Burden was born in Sherborne Causeway, Motcombe, Dorset, on 30 Aug 1881 and baptised at St. Johns Church, Enmore Green, on 30 Oct 1881 the son of Stephen Burden and Elizabeth Annie Moore Burden (nee Bridle). He lived his early life in Enmore Green and married Maud Toogood there during 1905. By 1911 he was living in East Stour, Dorset. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers as a Driver (Service No. 136996). It is not known in which theatre of war he served but on his discharge was awarded the Victory and British War Medals. The 1921 Census shows him living at 20 Vallis Way, Frome, Somerset, and by the time of the 1939 Register he had moved to 6 Bridge Street, Frome, Somerset, employed as a Farm Worker. His death was recorded in Frome during 1963. Of his brothers, Willie George Burden was killed in action and Alfred Tom Burden served and survived.
