Story: Arthur William Smith was born in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, on 8 Sep 1890 the son of Frederick Smith and Susannah Smith. He spent his early life in the Luton, Bedfordshire, area. He had married Annie Lavinia Field in Luton during 1911 but had been boarding at an address in The Street, Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset, at the time of 1911 Census and presumably continued to lived there where he was employed as a Farm Labourer. The Motcombe Parish Magazine of May 1916 indicates he was serving with the 4th Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment though no military record has been found. By the 1921 Census he had returned to 166 Dallow Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, where he was working as a Gas Stoker. By the 1939 Register he had moved along the road to 287 Dallow Road, Luton, still employed as a Gas Stoker. His death was recorded in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, on 17 Mar 1971.
