Story: Alfred Fanner was born on 1 Oct 1891 in Donhead St. Mary, Wiltshire, and baptised at the Birdbush Independent Chapel, Donhead St. Mary, on 28th October, 1891. He was the son of James Alfred Fanner and Louisa Fanner (née Ingram). At the time of the 1911 Census he was single and working as a cowman on a farm and living with his brother Frederick, in Charlton, Donhead St. Mary, Wiltshire. He enlisted in Southampton as a Private in the 1st Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment (Service No. 10944). He served in France & Flanders from 19 Dec 1915 and was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star. He was killed in action on 17th June 1918 and was buried at the Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, Pas de Calais, France (grave id. 1.A.23). His home address at the time of death was Hill View, 28 Charlton, Donhead St. Mary and he is remembered on the war memorial at Ludwell, Donhead St. Mary, Wiltshire. His mother had later applied for a dependent's pension but it is not known if she was successful.
