Story: Albert John Pond was born in Motcombe, Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 29 Oct 1888 and baptised there on 25 Dec 1888 the son of John Pond and Rose Mary Pond (nee Bown). His father died in 1892. He lived his early life at Elm Top, Motcombe. He enlisted on 23 Feb 1916 and was mobilised on 8 Apr 1916 joining the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner (Service No. 73530). He served in France and Flanders with the 49th and 129th Siege Batteries. He was discharged on 12 Oct 1919 and awarded the Victory and British War Medals. The 1921 Census shows him living with his sister at 85 Corner Lane, Motcombe, Dorset, working as a Motor Lorry Driver. He married Susan Doris House at All Saints Church, Hilton, Blandford, Dorset, on 26 Oct 1929. By the time of the 1939 Register he had moved to 6 Thornhill Road, Stalbridge, Dorset, now described as a Driver and Deliverer for a Miller. His death was recorded in Stalbridge in 1974 and he was buried there on 27 Aug 1974.
