Story: William Henry Hibdige was born in Gussage-All-Saints, Dorset, on 29 May 1896 and baptised there on 16 August, 1896, the son of George Hibdige and Jane Hibdige (nee Sargent). He lived his early life in Gussage-All-Saints until by 1911 when he was recorded living in Dean, Woodcutts, Sixpenny Handley, Dorset, working as a Farm Carter. He enlisted with the 1st Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment as a Private (Service No. 10305). He served in Mesopotamia with the 5th Battalion from 1 July 1915 and was later transferred to the 1st Battalion of the King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment (Service No. 51380). On his discharge was awarded the Victory and British War Medals as well as the 1915 Star. His marriage to Rosalie Eleanor Bast was registered in Salisbury, Wiltshire, during 1933. By the time of the 1939 Register he was living at 22 Wessex Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire, working as a Corporation Labourer. His death was recorded in Salisbury during 1953. His wife remarried widower Reginald Harry Forder in Salisbury during 1956.
