Thomas Mansfield was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 11 Aug 1871 the son of William Charles Mansfield and Mary Elizabeth Mansfield (nee Stone).  The family lived in Salisbury Street, Shaftesbury, Dorset, until moving to Kingston upon Thames just prior to 1891.   Thomas married Emma LLoyd at St. Lukes Church, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, on 5 Sep 1899.  They went on to have two children.  He had volunteered with the Territorial force of the 3rd Voluntary Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment on 14 Nov 1892.  It is presumed he was discharged at some point.  He re-enlisted on 7 Apr 1908 as a Reserve Territorial with the 6th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment attending regular annual training camps. (Service No. 57).  He was embodied for regular service on 26 Aug 1914 and served in India rising to the rank of Acting Sergeant.   He was discharged on 19 May 1916 due to ending the terms of his engagement.   He was awarded the British War and Territorial Force War Medals.   By the 1939 Register he was living at Woodland Drive, Watford, Hertfordshire.   He died in Watford in Jan 1949.  (Thomas' brother, Charles Stone Mansfield, also served in the conflict.)
