Story: Ernest James Gray was born in Semley, Wiltshire, on 14 Jun 1887 the son of James Taylor Gray and Sarah Jane Gray (nee Scammell). Ernest's father had died by the time of the 1901 Census and the remaining family lived at Gutch Common, Semley, Wiltshire, until Ernest had moved to Portsmouth, Hampshire, where he lived with an Uncle. By 1911 his mother had moved to Buckland, Portsmouth, and Ernest had moved back with her. His marriage to Edith Mary Hooper was recorded at the Plymouth, Devonshire, Registry in 1912. He had enlisted with the Royal Naval Air Service on 2 Jul 1917 as a Fitter (Service No. F32585). He served in the Scilly Isles, Cornwall, transferring to the newly formed Royal Air Force on 1 Apr 1918 with Service No. 232585. He was discharged on 8 Mar 1919 and awarded the British War Medal. Regrettably he died in Portsmouth on 28 Mar 1931. His brother, Howard James Gray, also saw service during the conflict.
