Story: Edward William Broomfield was born in 1886 in Ringwood, Hampshire. He was the son of Harry Broomfield, a Gamekeeper, and Fanny Broomfield. His siblings included Frederick John, born in 1884. The family lived at Melbury Abbas, Shaftesbury, Dorset. From April 1902 to February 1905 Frederick was in the Scots Guards, followed by service in the reserves. At the time of the 1911 Census he was single, working as a Gamekeeper and living in Melbury Abbas, Dorset. He enlisted in the Sussex Regiment (Service No. G/2674) and at the time of his death held the rank of Lance Corporal. He served in British Expeditionary Force in France and was awarded the Victory, British War and 1915 Star medals. He died on 20th November 1917 and his name appears on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval (Panel 7.). He is remembered on the war memorial at Ludwell.
